FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The New England Revolution signed U.S. World Cup star Jermaine Jones as much for what he will mean to the team off the field as on it. Although the addition of the former Bundesliga midfielder could help propel the Revolution into the playoffs, the MLS team is also hoping that his star power rubs off on his new teammates. Coach Jay Heaps said after introducing Jones on Tuesday that hes already seen some benefits. "When he walked in the door, there was an instant respect," Heap said. "The players are looking for leadership, and thats what he brought." The Revolution missed the post-season last season and this year are in sixth place, one point out of the fifth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Despite a post-World Cup vacation, Jones intends to be available for the Revolution game in Toronto on Saturday. "I would be lying if I said I was 100 per cent," Jones said. "I will do everything I can do to help this team. Maybe I dont start from beginning. Who knows, maybe I will start on bench." Its unlikely that the Revolution brought Jones in as a designated player to watch him sit on the bench for long. The son of an American serviceman and German mother, Jones played every minute of the four American games at this years World Cup, scoring a goal in the 2-2 draw against Portugal in the opening round. After Brazil, he took some time to consider his options. Heap said that as soon as he heard Jones might be available, he was interested. "Weve been looking for a player like this," he said. "The minute you hear that a player of Jermaines calibre is out there, we jumped at the opp. ... He was exactly the player we wanted." Jones, who said he had been considering MLS even before the World Cup, made it official with the league and then waited to find out where he was assigned. To sort out competing claims by the Revolution and Chicago Fire, the league held a blind draw Sunday, and New England was chosen. "Fortunately for us, our name came up, and were really excited about it," Revolution President Brian Bilello said. "Youve seen him at the World Cup this year. On the field we know hes going to be tremendous for our club." The Revolution have long operated in the shadow of the NFLs New England Patriots, sharing owners and a stadium but not the same record of success as the three-time Super Bowl champions. General manager Mike Burns said the signing was significant, but not a signal that the team would change its approach. "Well continue to operate the way weve always operated," he said. But Rooney headed United level seven minutes later, and the striker netted his 16th of the season for the struggling champions from the penalty spot before halftime. Asics Gel Nimbus 17 Comprar.com) - Tyreke Evans hit a sweeping layup with 1.COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Connor Shaw threw for one touchdown and rushed for another as No. 10 South Carolina won its record fifth straight over No. 6 Clemson with 31-17 victory Saturday night. The Gamecocks (10-2) won their 18th straight at home, extending a school record set earlier this year. For Shaw, it capped the seniors home career at a perfect 17-0 as a starter in the sweetest way possible. The Tigers (10-2) had never lost five consecutive games to their rival in a series that began in 1896 -- which they still lead 65-42-4 all-time. The loss also left record-setting quarterback Tajh Boyd 0-for-4 against the Gamecocks. South Carolina put things away with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to break away from 17-all tie. Mike Davis had a 2-yard scoring run with 11:47 left and Pharoh Cooper threw a 26-yard TD pass to Brandon Wilds. The Gamecocks rushed to the student section in when the game ended, celebrating the unprecedented streak. South Carolina may have more to celebrate Saturday: If No. 19 Texas A&M defeats No. 5 Missouri, the Gamecocks would head to the Southeastern Conference title game to face fourth-ranked Auburn. Many in the crowd remained to watch as officials showed the Aggies-Tigers game on the stadiums 124-foot wide video board. Clemson left the field defeated again and wondering why an offence that sets records in every other game struggles at the hands of its rivals. The answer this time was easy: six turnovers, three which led to touchdowns. The most crushing miscues came in fourth quarter when defensive end Chaz Sutton ripped the ball from Boyds arms with the Tigers driving for the tying score deep in South Carolina territory down 24-17. When the Clemson forced a punt moments later, Adam Humphries fumbled the punt back to South Carolina. Thats when Cooper pass to Wilds put the game out of reach. Boyd, always a step behind in the rivalry, gave the sold-out crowd at Williams-Brice two final mistakes to cheer about with a pair of interceptions in the final four minutes. Booyd finishes his career throwing five interceptions and getting sacked 19 times in four games with South Carolina.dddddddddddd Shaw completed 14 of 26 for 152 yards and a 9-yard TD throw to Shaq Roland. Shaw also ran for 94 yards and a 3-yard touchdown. Clemson was desperately trying to escape the 365-day-a-year yoke of its long, long series losing streak coming in. Boyd, the one-time Heisman Trophy contender, has chalked up 57 school and Atlantic Coast Conference records in his career, yet had always come up short in the season-ending game. Boyd even took a sack by Jadeveon Clowney, who taunted the quarterback this summer by saying he was scared of South Carolinas defensive front. Clowney hadnt had a sack since Sept. 14 against Vanderbilt in game three, but put Boyd down to stop a second-quarter drive. Boyd ended 19 of 27 for 225 yards with two interceptions. He was sacked five times. Boyd came out firing on Clemsons first drive, going 5 for 5 and leading the Tigers to the South Carolina 30. Thats when Watkins underthrew Humphries on a half-back pass and Brison Williams moved in for an easy interception. Shaw led a steady, 17-play march down the field that ended with the seniors lunging, 3-yard TD. The 17 plays marked the longest Gamecocks scoring drive of the year. It didnt take long for Clemson to answer back, Boyd finding Watkins for a 57-yard catch and run. Two plays later, Boyd tied things on his 8-yard run. The Tigers looked like they might gain back the momentum after forcing a South Carolina punt. But Humphries and Martavis Bryant collided and Gamecocks linebacker Skai Moore recovered. Shaw had a 16-yard pass to Connor McLaurin to get to Clemsons 8, then followed that with a TD pass to Shaq Roland. Clemson cut the lead to 17-10 at the end of the half on Chandler Catanzaros 38-yard field goal. The Tigers had averaged 30 points in the first half of their past four games. They had not been held to this few since trailing Florida State 27-7 after two quarters on Oct. 19.
