WASHINGTON -- For a weekend at least, the Washington Capitals adjusted nicely to life without Alex Ovechkin. With their star forward out for a second straight night with an unspecified upper-body injury, Washington won its second game in a row with a 3-2 a shootout victory over the Florida Panthers on Saturday night. After Tomas Fleischmann forced overtime with a game-tying, 4-on-3 goal with 2:38 left in the third period, the Capitals recovered with shootout tallies by Mikhail Grabovski, Brooks Laich, and the clincher by Nicklas Backstrom. After Laichs shootout score on Florida goalie Scott Clemmensen, which appeared to come as he lost the puck, Washington goalie Michal Neuvirth made the biggest of his 31 saves, catching Jonathan Huberdeaus attempt with his glove. Backstrom then ended it with a clean shot to the left side. "Tonight was an ugly one," Backstrom said. "Neuvy played great and kept us in the game." Neuvirth finished with 31 saves. Clemmensen had 21. One of the players most relieved by Backstroms deciding shot was defenceman Steve Oleksy (seven blocked shots), who committed the slashing penalty that paved the way for Fleischmanns goal. The score ended Washingtons string of successful penalty kills at 35, with five coming Saturday night "You cant have that. Steven knows that. You cant lose your cool," Washington coach Adam Oates said. "Fortunately, the shootout bailed him out." Florida lost its fifth straight, but showed improvement from its listless 4-0 loss Friday night at home to St. Louis. "I think we stepped in a good direction tonight," Fleischmann said. "We played like a team, pretty good all 60 minutes and I think thats how we get our two points next game." Ovechkin had scored 10 goals in 12 games before he was hurt in the first period Monday at Vancouver. The Capitals have outscored opponents 10-2 without him, but Saturdays win wasnt nearly as easy as Fridays 7-0 domination of the Philadelphia Flyers. "Youre still patching the dike in a sense. You dont want to lose anybody, let alone your star," Oates said. "It proves your team is still a solid hockey team." Washington broke on top late in the first period with a fast-break goal that Backstrom started and finished. After winning a faceoff at the red line, he received a lead pass from Eric Fehr and fired a 15-foot shot through Clemmensens legs. With the score, Backstrom replaced Ovechkin as the team leader in points with 16. Winchester tied it at 8:20 of the second period on a breakaway goal, but Carlson answered 36 seconds later for Washington. Fourth-line centre Michael Latta got his first NHL assist in helping Carlson score the first goal for a Washington defenceman in 30 days. "We need offence from our (defence). Every team does," Oates said. "You could tell by his celebration how much it meant to him." NOTES: The Capitals have a 13-8-2 record in games missed by Ovechkin. ... A night after brawling with the Philadelphia Flyers at the end of their 7-0 win, the Caps were involved in more conventional tussle as Marcel Goc of the Panthers went after Latta after the Washington rookie elbowed Fleischmann, Floridas top scorer. ... Washingtons Marcus Johansson took what appeared an inadvertent stick to his chin in the third period. Al Macinnis Blues Jersey. Louis Blues continued on Wednesday night in Denver. After the game that saw the Blues snap the Avalanches three-game winning streak with a 4-1 win at the Pepsi Center to win their fifth-consecutive game, head coaches Patrick Roy and Ken Hitchcock had choice words for one another. Jay Bouwmeester Jersey. Fisher, one ahead overnight, carded a 5-under-par 67, including seven birdies and two bogeys, at Copperleaf to lie at 18 under after three rounds. His fourth and last tour win was the Irish Open in 2010, when he also played in the Ryder Cup. http://www.jerseynhlblueshockey.com/ryan-reaves-hockey-jersey/. Harnessing all their big-game experience, the Germans delivered a performance of maturity and efficiency to hold off France 1-0 on Friday and become the first team to reach four straight semifinals in the sports marquee tournament. Shayne Corson Blues Jersey.com) - Four-time champion Novak Djokovic has been installed as the top seed at the Australian Open, which will begin Monday in Melbourne. Shayne Corson Jersey.Rooney was set up well by his teammates for both goals as Radamel Falcao met a long cross into the area in the 23rd minute, sliding to reach the ball at the far post and square a perfect pass for Rooney to tap into an empty net.MILWAUKEE -- Giannis Antetokounmpo is the rookie who gets most of the attention for Milwaukee. It was another first-year player who made the biggest shot Tuesday night to give the Bucks a rare victory. Nate Wolters hit a 3-pointer with 29 seconds left to give Milwaukee the lead for good in a 104-100 win over the Orlando Magic. With an NBA-worst 10-43 record, Bucks coach Larry Drew is giving plenty of minutes to young players. Antetokounmpo and Wolters made key contributions both offensively and defensively in the final minutes against Orlando. "They hit a dagger, that shot Nate hit," Magic guard ETwaun Moore said. Wolters missed 26 of his first 29 attempts from 3-point range this season but is 5 for 11 in the teams last four games. "Im feeling a lot better from 3. Im going to shoot with confidence, and hopefully I can keep it up," he said. "Ive been playing so many minutes. Coach is giving me the opportunity, so I have to knock some shots down." His 27-foot jumper with 6 seconds left on the shot clock helped Milwaukee snap a four-game losing streak. "I didnt have much time so I just decided to pull up and shoot it," Wolters said. "Sometimes those are the easiest ones, when you know you have to shoot it. Its nice to get a win." After Wolters gave the Bucks the lead, Antetokounmpo stole the ball from Arron Afflalo and was fouled, making one free throw for a 100-97 advantage. "I was focused tonight," Antetokounmpo said. "For a rookie that means a lot to be focused down the stretch, especially being a little bit panicked." Brandon Knight overcame a bizarre foot injury for the Bucks, scoring 18 points and making two free throws with 5.5 seconds left to seal the victory. He played 34 minutes despite slicing his foot open on a baseboard while stepping out of his bathroom shower Tuesday afternoon. Knight, unavailable for comment after the game, missed 10 of 13 shots from the field but hit all 12 of his free throws. Before the game, he said he was unsure whether he could pplay.dddddddddddd. He started anyway. The Bucks made 22 of 30 free throws, while the Magic went 9 of 16. "The free throws were the big thing," Orlando coach Jacque Vaughn said. "Their ability to get in the bonus and get downhill and get into the lane was a big part of them winning." Orlando fell to 3-24 on the road. Despite snapping their four-game skid, the Bucks have lost 19 of 22 overall. Afflalo scored 21 points and Nikola Vucevic added 19 for Orlando. After Antetokounmpo made the free throw that gave Milwaukee a 100-97 lead, Afflalo missed a 3-pointer. Ersan Ilyasova hit a pair of free throws for a 102-97 advantage. Jameer Nelson made a 3 with 6 seconds to go to make it 102-100. Knight was fouled and made both free throws to clinch it. Caron Butler, returning after missing four games with a sprained ankle, led the Bucks with 21 points on seven 3-pointers but didnt score in the fourth quarter. Afflalo shot 9 of 15 to snap a mini-slump. The Magic guard had made only 15 of 44 shots in his past four games. Vucevic took a pass from Nelson and made a 14-foot jumper to give Orlando (16-39) a 97-96 advantage with 50 seconds left, its first lead since 4 minutes remained in the third quarter. Antetokounmpo capped Milwaukees 8-2 run to open the fourth. He blocked a layup attempt by Kyle OQuinn and hit John Henson for a dunk, giving the Bucks an 89-81 lead with 8:57 to go. Orlando scored the next seven points to pull to 89-88 on Maurice Harkless 3-pointer with 6:44 left. Butler made six 3s and the Bucks led 53-47 at halftime. It was only the 10th time in 53 games that Milwaukee has led at halftime. NOTES: Milwaukee F Khris Middleton left in the first quarter after twisting his ankle, but returned in the second. ... O.J. Mayo, who had missed nine consecutive games with what the Bucks termed "illness/conditioning," was expected to play limited minutes but remained on the bench the entire game. Drew said he had hoped to play Mayo, but was unable to due to game circumstances.
