For the first time in a quarter century, the American League Most Valuable Player is a starting pitcher. With just under half the first place votes – 13 of 28 – Verlander won the award amidst one of the more open races the league has seen in recent memory. But was Verlander, a pitcher, the right call for MVP? With a staggering 24-5 record and leading all the major categories that govern starting pitching, Verlander is just days removed from unanimously winning the American League Cy Young Award. He was instrumental in leading the Tigers to the American League Central crown and was far and away the best pitcher in the league this year. However, with there being a separate award for the leagues best pitcher, should Verlander have been eligible for the award that traditionally goes to the best everyday player? One of the factors that helped Verlanders win was that many of the top statistical categories for hitters were scattered amongst several players. The Yankees Curtis Granderson led the league in runs scored and runs batted in. Bostons Gold Glove centrefielder Jacoby Ellsbury finished top-five in batting average and was also amongst the league leaders in stolen bases. Jose Bautista of the Toronto Blue Jays led the league for a second straight year in home runs and led in one of baseballs glamour categories OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage), in addition to raising his batting average more than 40 points from his .260 mark in 2010. Verlanders teammate Miguel Cabrera led the league in batting average and on-base percentage as well as ranking in the top-five in runs scored. With no one finishing in the top five in all three triple-crown categories, it was the type of year that a pitcher could pull votes from position players, even if Verlander hadnt had an extraordinary year. However, at what point do talented teammates detract from an MVP season. One of the common criterion used to determine a players value is determining whether or not the team would have won as many games without said player. But, if a team has more than one MVP candidate, does that lessen the impact of one or the other? Of the top seven vote-getters in the MVP race, there were two players each representing the Red Sox (second-place Ellsbury and seventh-place Adrian Gonzalez), Yankees (fourth-place Granderson and seventh-place Robinson Cano) and Tigers (Verlander and fifth-place Cabrera). The only player to not have a teammate up there was the third-place finisher, Jose Bautista. But the knock on him was that he was the only player amongst the top candidates whose team was not a playoff contender. All the others that finished top-10 in MVP voting came from one of the four playoff teams or the Red Sox, who finished one game out in the Wild Card. While Bautista had the least support from elite teammates, the Blue Jays also finished 10 games out of the playoffs. With an award that traditionally rewards players from successful or competitive teams, the Jays record was likely a major knock against Bautistas case. So, whats your take? Was Verlander the right call for MVP? As always, its Your! Call. Ryan Kerrigan Jersey. Fontaine, Minnesotas seventh shooter, went wide on Canucks goaltender Eddie Lack and slid the puck under him. Wild goaltender Darcy Kuemper preserved the win by denying Vancouvers final shooter, David Booth, as he attempted a spin-o-rama shot. Trent Williams Redskins Jersey. Andre Drummond had 19 points and 14 rebounds, and Detroit shot a season-best 55 per cent to blow by the Jazz 114-94 Monday night. http://www.authenticredskinsfanatic.com/c-52-redskins-josh-norman-jersey.aspx. Coach Jorge Luis Pinto resisted naming any major surprises in the lineup and is using the same core of players who helped Costa Rica to qualify as the top team from the CONCACAF region. Pinto said he was happy to stick with his proven players and valued continuity in the team. Russ Grimm Redskins Jersey. Kerr shot a four-under 66 for a second consecutive day, while Park carded a five-under 65, leaving both tied for top spot after two rounds at the Royal Mayfair Golf Club. Both were 8-under 132 in a day of golf under slightly overcast skies with gentle winds. Charles Mann Jersey. Kessel scored the second of three straight goals for the Maple Leafs in the third period as they recovered to beat the Vancouver Canucks 3-1 at Air Canada Centre. He assisted on the Maple Leafs third goal and almost had the first Gordie Howe hat trick - a goal, an assist and a fight - of his NHL career when he and pesky Alexandre Burrows scuffled and just about dropped the gloves late in the second period.FIVE QUICK NBA THOUGHTS 1. GREIVIS VASQUEZ (Raptors): Has been sensational for the Raps in the past few weeks. His confidence in his three-point shooting and his ability to make difficult shots in the lane have been huge. He runs the team well and plays with wonderful enthusiasm. Major pick-up as a back-up point guard and hes finally settled in to his role and comfort level in Toronto. Really fun/upbeat personality who loves the game and plays with a swagger. Fun to see it all coming together for him. 2. ALLEN IVERSONS NO. 3 RETIRED IN PHILLY: In an otherwise gloomy season in Philadelphia, this was the definite highlight. Talk about a guy that absolutely carried his team and was the heart and soul of his franchise. Loved the passion and toughness he played with. When you think of great small guards who have ever played the game, hes right at the top of the list. His competitive spirit resonated throughout the teams he led and the city that adopted him. I think back to broadcasting the 2001 Raptors seven-game series in the Eastern Conference semi-finals against them and he was awesome. A complete joy to watch. Willed his team to the NBA Finals. Deserving honour. 3. NY KNICKS: I talk about AI and his competitive spirit and then I watch the Knicks vs. Bulls game on Sunday and just shake my head. The wheels have come off and Im not surprised one bit. When the Knicks were in Toronto twice during the pre-season I could sense from chatting with their folks an over-confidence about what they achieved last season and the feeling that they would just pick up where they left off. It aint that easy. Last season doesnt mean a thing - youve got to start off all over again. Complacency can be a killler.dddddddddddd Whats the old line? "Good is the enemy of great". Doubt the Knicks would ever be considered great but they sure were good last year. When you enjoy those good spoils of success and arent ready for the grind again it spells trouble. I feel bad for head coach Mike Woodson, its not like he hasnt called them and challenged them on things constantly. Losing battle right now. House cleaning coming. 4. JIMMER FREDETTE (Bulls): Nice pick-up for John Paxson and Gar Forman. This team is playing great yet lacks consistent offensive fire power. Wouldnt surprise me to see Jimmer earn some playing time in a few weeks after he gets adjusted to the new system. Remember last season, Nate Robinson and Marco Belinelli were huge for them off the bench as DJ Augustin has been this year. Jimmer will give them another three-point threat. Yes, hes got challenges defensively due to his size - he lacks lateral quicks - but he will compete his tail off and stick shots if he gets in. Im sure hell get a good look down the road this month. Solid under-the-radar move. 5. THABO SEFOLOSHA and KENDRICK PERKINS (Thunder): Both banged up right now in OKC and with the return of Russell Westbrook its been a revolving door around Kevin Durant yet I think its all a blessing for their organization. Its been "Force Feed" time for Reggie Jackson, Steven Adams, Jeremy Lamb and Perry Jones and theyve developed folks that need to grow as players quickly in an elite environment. From April 15 onward when both injured guys will be back for the Playoffs, the depth and experience of these challenges will help this team become steadier and more consistent when the stakes are higher.
